Martha Stewart Living Photo Shoot
It runs in the family. We were most fortunate to have Grenadine Sea Salt featured in the June 2020 issue of Martha Stewart Living magazine. The article does a beautiful job of telling the story of the birthing of a business with deep culinary and creative roots. The feature came about in part due to some unique professional history and family connections with the magazine— both Jerry and Elizabeth, partners in GSS and former food photographers and film directors, had worked with Martha Stewart many moons ago. So when Martha was made aware of Jerry’s new enterprise—producing craft salt on the island of Bequia—she was intrigued enough to want to do a feature article in her magazine.
Christopher Simpson, Jerry’s son, has been a regular contributing photographer to Martha Stewart Living for the past couple years as well, having followed in his Dad’s footsteps. He initially presented the idea while working on another shoot for the magazine. So there was something beautifully circular in nature in having Chris come to Bequia to photograph the story for us back in January. He does a better job of sharing the story of the experience on his exquisite instagram feed @chrisrsimpson than I’ll ever be able to do here. Of course there are many people to thank—Kevin West for his beautiful writing, Shira Bocar for her wonderful recipes using our salt, Hannah Milman for her support of the project and of course Martha herself.
Needless to say the shoot was huge fun. Chris, having grown up visiting Bequia, has a particular love for the island and its people. He wanted the article to be as much a celebration of the beauty of the island as well as the salt, so we packed up the trusty Rover and headed out.
It was amazing watching Chris in action, with such a confident, clear vision of what he was going for, yet with such a willingness to embrace whatever unexpected gifts presented along the way—the mark of a true creative professional. We so enjoyed taking a backseat with the photography, knowing the results would be brilliant, and they most certainly are.
